Earthquake!
Just had an earthquake -- my first San Francisco earthquake.
Strange experience!
Not a biggie -- but shook the apartment. I've never been through one of the Seattle quakes, so this was my first earthquake. The ground does roll, doesn't it?
more on the quake at USGS and SF Gate.
Update -- I was the first source online to report the quake. You can all pay me now...
Just found out the quake was a 5.2, and occurred at 10:01 in Gilroy, south of San Francisco. This is a significant quake without being overly dangerous. Enough to shake but not shatter.
Reports of water pipe breakage, that sort of thing. My apartment's on landfill, which might account for the "rolling" impression. I actually felt it in my chair before it rattled the door. Felt as if the floor literally rolled under me.
Sorry if I'm going on, but this really was a unique experience for me...
BTW -- You'll all be glad to know that I looked out the window and the Bay Bridge is still standing ;-)

Wheeee! A long one, it seemed. Didn't even wake the kids.

The kids are going to unhappy at missing this one!
I read about it on Metafilter (Hi, my name's Stav and I'm a MeFi addict), and came straight here to see if you were blogging it.
It's a weird, connected world we're living in....
Stavros, I was in middle of post when I hit, so whipped out a note on the quake. Look at my post time compared to the official earthquake time.
This whole interconnectivity -- that's the great thing!
Yeah,that was fun.
I checked SF Gate and then I came here to see if you blogged it.
Saw your post on metafilter and wondered if you'd written about it. A friend is over, and we had time to talk about it as it was happening. Really dizzying. I was disoriented afterwards.
Glad to hear you're OK. I've been woken a couple of times by earthquakes when I've been in Japan. It's indeed a strange experience.
I've heard about the disoriented feeling from others who have been in a quake.
As long as no one was hurt and no real damage occurred, I have to admit that it was actually a bit of fun. And I still can't get over that "rolling" feeling.
Earthquakes are 'interesting' aren't they, says me living on the side of a volcano that 'talks' regularly. Good to see that you are ok Bird. ;)
And since it was harmless, you're lucky to have been on softer ground. More rolling (and more fun) that way. I'm on a hill of rock and all I got was a single rumble.
WHEW!! So glad you are ok, Shell! I was offline last night due to tornadoes...you were the first person I thought of whan I heard!
Glad you're ok. I've had hurricanes (8 direct hits), a flood, blizzards (too many to count), tornados (2 sightings), hail ... but never a 'real' earthquake. Just 2 slight jiggles while I was in MA. This goes well with your Mt. St. Helens experience, eh?
Welcome to the Bay, BB! (You ain't a real Bay dweller till you've had ya first earthquake at home! :-})
Hey, BB - another benefit of living in the SF area (besides the occasional roller-coaster ride) is the politics. Did you catch the last item in Leah Garchik's column in today's SF Chron?
"Touring San Francisco with Mayor Willie Brown for an episode of "Extra" broadcast Wednesday night, John Leguizamo suggested himself as an ideal vice presidential candidate on a ticket with Brown for president. "
I just might vote for them . . .
